We were inspired by a recent FMIndustry story on the launch of a new Cleaning Academy at HM Prison Wealstun, part of the UK Ministry of Justice’s HMP Academies Programme. This innovative initiative gives prisoners approaching release the chance to gain industry-recognised cleaning qualifications, plus vital employability skills such as CV writing and interview practice – all supported by real, hands-on training in a mock workplace environment.
At APM Cleaning, we’ve long believed in the power of second chances. Back in 2022, we shared why we successfully hire prison leavers and ex-offenders, and how this aligns with our core values of fairness, opportunity, and belief in people’s potential. What’s happening at HMP Wealstun shows just how impactful structured training and real pathways to employment can be — not just inside prison walls, but out in the real world too. By helping people build skills and confidence before release, the sector can play a part in reducing reoffending, strengthening communities, and addressing labour challenges. It’s practical, purposeful work that benefits everyone.
👏 Kudos to all involved in this programme — and to everyone in our industry embracing inclusive hiring and meaningful support for ex-offenders. Together we can turn training into transformation.
